Is it Possible to Have the Forbidden City All to Yourself?

When planning a family trip to Beijing, most travelers have one major fear: The Crowds. Especially for a family traveling from the United States with a toddler, navigating through thousands of tourists can be stressful.

But as a local Beijing photographer, I know the secret to a peaceful, royal experience.

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely American family of three. They wanted to capture their first trip to China but were worried about their little one getting overwhelmed. My solution? The “Early Bird” Strategy.

The “Golden Rule” of Timing: Beat the 8:30 AM Opening

Look at the photo above. The background is clean, the sky is deep blue, and there are almost no other tourists. How did we achieve this at one of the world’s busiest attractions?

It comes down to precise timing.

  • Official Opening Time: The Palace Museum opens its gates at 8:30 AM
  • The Mistake: Most tourists arrive at 8:30.
  • My Pro Strategy: I advised the family to arrive and start queuing 30 to 45 minutes early (around 7:45 AM).

By queuing early, we cleared security and ticket checks instantly. While the large tour groups were still gathering outside, we were already inside. We enjoyed the “Golden Hour” morning light with the grand halls all to ourselves.

Why Morning is Best for Kids

For this family, the early start was a game-changer.

  • Freedom to Roam: With the vast squares empty, their daughter could run around safely without getting lost in a sea of legs.
  • Perfect Light: The morning sun hits the golden glazed tiles perfectly, creating a warm, vibrant look that defines Beijing’s royal aesthetic.
  • Cooler Temperatures: Beating the midday heat kept everyone in high spirits.

Essential Logistics: Tickets & Entry

If you are planning a similar shoot, preparation is key. Here is what you need to know:

  • Ticket Booking: Tickets are released 7 days in advance and sell out within minutes. You must book through the Official Palace Museum Website.
  • Passport Required: Don’t forget your physical passports! They are your entry tickets.
  • The Route: We entered from the Meridian Gate (Wu Men) and moved efficiently from the Hall of Supreme Harmony to the quieter side palaces before the 10:00 AM rush.

Creating Memories, Not Just Photos

For this American couple, this wasn’t just a photoshoot; it was the highlight of their Beijing itinerary. They got to experience the grandeur of the Forbidden City in peace.

Are you bringing your family to Beijing? Don’t let the crowds scare you away.
